Iroquois Community School students in the Drone Soccer Club received a surprise visit from an officer of the Des Plaines Police Department.

Officer Cerasa, a member of the swat team and the person responsible for flying the police department drones, came to Iroquois to talk to the students about the types of drone they use, as well as how and why they use them.

The students learned that the Des Plaines Police Department uses drones for inspecting different locations, particularly when they need to get into tight spots to do surveillance before starting an operation.

Police drones are much more durable than commercial drones, and the students were able to get a sense of how heavy they were as they passed them around the room.

The students watched intently as Officer Cerasa drew out a plan as to how he would fly a drone through a house if they were looking for someone who is in it.

Then it was time to demonstrate what both a driving and a flying drone can do.

Officer Cerasa drove the driving drone around the room, showing them the controller and demonstrating the limitations it had.

He then launched and flew the flying drone around the room and even through the hallway!

The students had a chance to try the driving drone themselves, taking turns maneuvering it around the music room.
